Manu Information Report





              






What Does It Look Like?
The Tui is a large dark New Zealand honeyeater bird. They grow from 27- 32 cm and weigh around 90
- 125 grams. It has a decurved bill with two white tufts on its throat that look like a bow tie.
The Chatham Island Tui are larger and have longer throat tufts.


Where Does It Live?
The Tui lives in drier and more larger lands. They are endemic to New Zealand and offshore islands.
They live in native forests, bush reserves and towns where there are flax and kowhai.


What Does It Eat?
Its preferred diet is nectar and honeydew. But fruit and insects are frequently eaten,
and pollen and seeds more occasionally.


Threats
The Tui is not threatened, but the Chatham Island Tui is endangered due to loss of habitat.
From the time of European settlement tui number decreased mainly due to destruction and loss of their
habitat. However in more recent times their numbers have increased and they are now considered secure.


Reproduction
The eggs are laid from September to January and the nest is made by the female.


Social Behaviour
The male Tui is aggressive to other species of birds.

The Tui are often found on their own, in pairs, or in small groups.

Reducing our Plastic Waste

We have been learning about reducing plastic waste this term. The two simple ways we have been able to do this is making fabric bags and beeswax wrap. We used fabric bags instead of single use plastic bags. We used sewing machines to complete this task. It was the first time I've ever used a sewing machine. The bees wax wrap is easy to make. First grate the bees wax and put it into a container. Then put baking paper on a ironing board. Get your fabric and put it on the baking paper then put the wax on like cheese. Then put another sheet of baking on top. Then iron over it, hang it up to dry, done! Simple.
Both of these ideas are quick and easy and good for the environment. Looking after the environment is the main reason why we made them (and because they look better than plastic bags and glad wrap). I love this activity and I would be looking forward to do another project like this.

Success criteria;


  • identify and explain some of the issues facing our environment today
  • identify some of the negative impacts humans are having on the environment
  • identify some positive actions people are taking both here and around the world to try and
  • help look after our environment.  
  • identify some positive actions we can take at school and in our own lives to help our
  • environment.
  • learn about our local bush track and creek and identify some ways in which we can help
  • to look after (kaitiakitanga) these areas.


Reading Learning Goals


-I am learning to use sub-headings to guide me to the main ideas in text.
-I am learning to use illustrations, text boxes, charts and graphs to help me make inferences so I
get more information from the text.
-I am learning to use more than one text, in print or electronic formats, to gather and check the
accuracy of information.
-I am learning to read a wide range of texts (e.g. encyclopaedias, websites, newspapers) to
gather and check information on a topic.
-I am learning to explain why the author has written a text.
-I am learning to read and understand text that contains academic and topic-specific vocabulary.

Read the text, ‘Turning Old Into New’ and then complete the following activities.

  1. Why is recycling a good idea? Because if we didn’t it would create bad gases and
  2. recycling reduces pollution.


  1. How many tons of rubbish do New Zealanders send to landfills every year? New
  2. Zealanders send 2.5 million tonnes of rubbish to landfills each year.


  1. When rubbish breaks down what gas does it produce?  What environmental problem
  2. does this contribute to? Rubbish produces Ch4, CO2 and N2O. Methane, Carbon dioxide
  3. and Nitrous oxide. Which contributes to global warming.


  1. Complete this sentence:  Everything we use is made from Earth’s     Natural    Resources
  1. Explain where these resources come from;
Wood: Wood comes from trees and plants.


Metal: Earth’s crust that is mined


Plastic: Oil and other natural materials

6) How does oil form? Oil forms from the remains of plants and animals that lived long ago,
like dinosaurs.

7) What are some of the things glass can be recycled into? Countertops and tile flooring.


8) What are some of the things cardboard can be recycled into? Cardboard can be recycled
into towels, tissues, paperboard and cereal boxes.


9) What can plastic with the number 1 be recycled into? Plastic with number 1 on it can be
made into clothing.


10)  Attach a google drawing here that explains how number 1 plastics can be turned into
clothing.

11) What are microfibers and what is the problem with them? Microfibers are tiny fibres found
in our own clothing. The problem is that they go into the ocean via the sewage systems and
the sea life eat the tiny microfibers.

12) What is Earth Overshoot day? Earth Overshoot day is a day when they mark the date when
we have used up all their Earth’s natural resources that the earth can reproduce in one year.

Glossary - Write what these words mean

Atoms: The smallest particle of substance.

Carded: Aligned to the same direction

Global Warming: An increase in the Earth’s average temperature due to increased levels of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere

Malt: Barley or other grain that has been used for brewing beer.

Natural resources: Materials found in nature. Example: air, water, gas and plants

Synthetic: Something made by people by combining different chemicals.

In class we will be working on projects looking at issues around rubbish and what we can do to help reduce this problem.

Reducing Waste Infographic

Science/Social Science learning goals
We are learning to understand about the environments around us and the negative of
positive impact our actions can have on these environments.


Success criteria;
identify some positive actions we can take at school and in our own lives to help
our environment.

Task: Create an infographic showing people how they can reduce their waste in their lunchbox.   


Our co-constructed success criteria:
-Have a strong title/hook
-Use convincing language and images
-Have simple things people can do
-Use images (free to use)
-Use bullet points/ short sharp information

-Use correct punctuation and spelling.

Jack and the Beanstalk Summary



Play Summary - Term 3 Weeks 1-2

For the next two weeks you are working in groups to practise and perform a
play. This is using our oral language and reading skills in literacy. Our key
competency focus is participating and contributing.

For writing your task is to summarise the main events in your play in three
paragraphs. You must plan your writing first but it is up to you how you do your
\ planning.  You must also write a fourth paragraph about your experience of
practising and performing your play.

Yr 6
I am learning to organise my text into paragraphs which begin with a main idea and contain
supporting information/detail.
I am learning to make links across paragraphs.
I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately.
I am learning to use dialogue punctuation accurately.

Yr 7
I am learning to use a range of different planning styles.
I am learning to plan my writing to suit the purpose of my writing.
I am learning to organise my ideas into paragraphs where the ideas are clearly related and where there are links within and between paragraphs.
I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately in my writing.
I am learning to use complex punctuation to enhance my writing e.g. colons : and
semi-colons ; , and parentheses ().

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can/have
-summarised the play in three paragraphs
-made links across my paragraphs
-used some basic and complex punctuation correctly (speech marks).

                Jack and the Giant Beanstalk

There was a boy called Jack who lived with his mother and they were poor.
His mother sent him on a mission to sell the cow. On the way to the market he
spots a fine man, who asks Jack if he wants some magic beans for the cow.
Jack accepts the trade.

When he got home his mother was cross with his trade and she sent him up
to his room and she threw the beans out the window. Next minute there was
a giant beanstalk outside Jacks window. Jack runs outside and starts
climbing it. When he got to the top he saw a giant castle. Jack heard a
noise a went to hide. “Fee, fi, fo, fum” x2 said the Giant. The Giant sat down
and went to sleep. While the giant’s asleep Jack spots a golden harp and a
hen that lays golden eggs. Jack takes these things and starts to run for the
beanstalk. The giant wakes up and starts to chase Jack.

Jack’s mother chopped the beanstalk down and Jack jumped onto the hay
field below and the Giant was never seen again. Jack and his mother had the
golden egg laying chicken and the harp. And they lived happily ever after.

When our group practised we were not focusing on what we were supposed
to be doing. But we managed to work things out and get on with reading our
script and doing our play. Things I need to improve on is being more confident
next time we do a play.
